Fishermen and lobster harvesters across South America are increasingly turning to PVC hexagonal nets as a durable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional fishing gear. These lightweight, corrosion-resistant nets are transforming local fishing industries in countries like Peru, Chile, and Brazil, offering higher efficiency and sustainability in both coastal and deep-sea operations.
In coastal communities, PVC hexagonal nets—commonly known as "hex mesh" or "chicken wire"—are being repurposed for catching fish and lobsters due to their flexibility and strength. Unlike conventional nylon or metal nets, PVC nets resist saltwater corrosion, reducing maintenance costs and extending their lifespan.
"We used to spend a lot of time repairing nylon nets damaged by rocks and saltwater," said Carlos Mendez, a fisherman from northern Peru. "With PVC nets, we save money and haul in bigger catches because the mesh keeps its shape better."
"These nets help us comply with size regulations while reducing bycatch," explained Ana Silva, a marine biologist working with Brazilian fishing cooperatives. "They’re a win for both fishermen and conservation efforts."
Chilean aquaculture farms are also utilizing PVC hex nets for fish cages, benefiting from their resistance to biofouling and UV degradation. Farmers report improved water flow and reduced disease outbreaks compared to traditional materials.
Despite their advantages, some fishermen cite higher upfront costs as a barrier to widespread adoption. However, NGOs and governments are stepping in with subsidies and training programs to promote PVC nets as a long-term investment.
As South America’s fishing industry seeks greener solutions, PVC hexagonal nets are proving to be a vital tool—balancing economic needs with environmental stewardship.
